Flickr now that everyone is tweeting

I have been posting images on Flickr with more regularity recently. There may be one or two images that I posted both here and on Flickr, though I am going to try not to do that in the future. I will try to post a picture a day, or at least have it balance out at the end of every week. The above image is today’s add. It is the flower of a eucalyptus tree. To be taken to my page click here.

Candles

DSC_6697-(1).jpg
I bought some candles today with the plan of painting them, as opposed to a light source for other objects, for which is what most of the candle I buy are used. Letting them burn for a while in close proximity of each other to accelerate their melting worked too well. Not that I am not happy with what I got, but I didn’t compose them in the positions I was thinking of for the paintings. Once it has cooled I’ll remove the excess wax and line them up in a more preferable ways.

More Drawings

DSC_6536.jpg
Here are 2 new drawings.

I have been thinking of doing a series of basketball hoop paintings, but I am not sure it is necessary to make the paintings. This drawing get to what core of what I want them to be. The isolation and clarity of the object depicted has always been an underlying factor in my work. I was tempted to add color, but I think I’ll resist that as long as possible in the drawings. Below: more pears, well a pear, cut in half with its top floating above it. Both drawings are 9 by 16 inches, white chalk on paper.

Skull Rock

DSC_5939.jpg
I went out to Joshua Tree and the Salton Sea with Sarah last week. I’ll post more later. Here are some pelicans enjoying the salty waters of the inland sea. We drove around the entire sea, but I didn’t really plan the Salton Sea portion of the trip very well. We saw some good things, but probably missed a lot. A quick pic of Skull Rock in Joshua Tree National Park, which I think was about 100 feet from the road—maybe less.

Note To Self Go See This Show

barbour.jpg
I am a big fan of hard edge painting, especially John MacLaughlin. I think his art represents the character of Los Angeles better than anyone’s. I will also admit I know very little about this group of artists beyond a monograph on MacLaughlin and a panel discussion I once saw that included Fredrick Hammersley and the late Walter Hopps—beyond looking at the actual paintings. A group of paintings dating from the mid-60s by John Barbour is on display at Cardwell Jimmerson Contemporary Art until the end of the year. Reproductions never do works like this justice, so I hope to get there before they are gone.
