I am a big fan of hard edge painting, especially John MacLaughlin. I think his art represents the character of Los Angeles better than anyone’s. I will also admit I know very little about this group of artists beyond a monograph on MacLaughlin and a panel discussion I once saw that included Fredrick Hammersley and the late Walter Hopps—beyond looking at the actual paintings. A group of paintings dating from the mid-60s by John Barbour is on display at Cardwell Jimmerson Contemporary Art until the end of the year. Reproductions never do works like this justice, so I hope to get there before they are gone.
