Chris Burden, Urban Light
Today, I went to see the new Broad Galleries at LACMA. I think it is better than most have described as a place to display work. For myself, there wasn’t a lot of artwork that I really liked or stood out as particularly strong works by the artists represented in the collection. Among the strong work, there was a superb Cy Twombly (Untitled, from 1955), Blue Electric Chair by Andy Warhol (1962?) as well as a quality group of Baldessaris. I was a bit disappointed that the Cindy Sherman selection of films still photographs was displayed in table top vitrines instead of framed on the wall.
Oh yeah, Norms, La Cienega, on Fire (1964) by Ed Ruscha is up there too!
I also liked the reinstallation of the rest of the museum. There was a good selection of John McLaughlin paintings in the Ahmanson Building, and a really really nice one on the second floor of the Art of Americas Building. As always, the museum has “pay what you like” after 5PM everyday they are open.
